A Stepmother’s Bill of Rights-Revised with my 5 cents

A Stepmother’s Bill of Rights

First off, every family is different and the person who wrote this based it on there family-which means it just won’t work for all families.
Here is how I feel and take this bill of right’s into account regarding our family.

1. I will be part of the decision-making process in my marriage and family at all times. Between Rey and I, yes, this is true no one can have a say in our relationship but us. With the children we have together this is true, but it’s just not a reality with my step children because they are also apart of their mother’s family and she does have a say as well.

2. People outside the immediate family – including ex-wives, in-laws and adult children – cannot make plans that affect my life without my consent. If you believe this your panties will be in a bunch quite a bit! Because you partially share your family now, I am not on the phone with Rey and his ex when decisions need to be made, therefore he has to check with me before hand, rearrange our plans, or make another phone call.

3. I will not be responsible for the welfare of children for whom I can set no limits. In the beginning I was okay with this they were not my responsibility, but when we decided to move in together and become a family, then we were making a decision to parent together in our home and had to set some rules for the child whom lived in our home. Now they are both our responsibility 90% of the time and they have to follow our house rules.

4. I must be consulted about which children will live with us, when they can visit and how long they will stay. If consulted mean told-yes, especially if you are going through the courts. If you’re not going through the courts and your hubby/ex do not have a great relationship than its going to be a nightmare. Thankfully we did get into the courts early and get it legally sorted out. It was not the outcome we wanted, but at least there were not anymore threats. Both children now live with us.

5. I will not be solely responsible for housework; chores will be distributed fairly. This is really up to how you and your husband describe fairly. Everyone in our home is responsible for some household tasks because it’s our home, and we are all responsible for it. 🙂

6. I will be consulted regarding all family financial matters. Two words-child support. In our case, its court ordered and we have the children and still pay child support because we have to hire a lawyer to undo the original court order and rewrite a new one.

7. Others may not violate my private space at home, nor take or use my possessions without my permission. We are talking about children here-right, and children do not do this…LOL Com’on Really!

8. I will never be treated as an “outsider” in my own home. As long as you are the one calling out the consequences, setting the boundaries, and enforcing the rules you will be treated as the bad guy/ememy/outsider by your children and your stepchildren (sometimes). As far as the word outsider goes…and what I think the person who wrote this meant was: they married a man whom had a family and she did not therefore coming into his family with his kids she felt like she was treated as an outsider. I would have to go back to when Rey and I were dating and the children’s mother hated me (in my opinion, I do not feel that way today)-it made it difficult to bond with the children in the beginning because they saw her display it and I felt like they were scared to like me. In my case only making time for bonding and building trust will fix this.

9. My husband and stepchildren must treat me with respect. Of course, I completely agree-everyone should be treated with respect.

10. Our marriage is our first priority, and we will address all issues together. I completely agree again, but harder to do than said.

There is no doubt about it being a stepmother is HARD! But it is not only hard for the stepmother, its hard on the father, the ex, and especially hard on the children.

Please feel free to way in on this. 🙂

My Truths for Today & a question!

  1. This week was a little overwhelming…We had the usual football practice and gymnastics plus a Science Fair and a Football Fundraiser at Peter Piper which the kids LOVED! 🙂 Plus Saturday we will have two games and pictures for football!
  2. Something that has never happened before when I introduce myself happened at the science fair. I introduced myself to Julie’s teacher as her stepmom then immediately Reyrey (stepson) repeats STEPmom for her teacher. We both looked at Reyrey and said yes, awkwardly. Julie really doesn’t make it a point to differentiate the two and really doesn’t bother to correct anyone. Reyrey on the other hand has been making it a point that people understand he has a step mom and a “real” mom. I wasn’t sure what to make of it at first, it did hurt my feelings that he wouldn’t want people to think I was his “real” mom. After I let it go and then thought about it today it just seems like an early teen stage…he is getting there and I can see it already coming that teen attitude to correct every thing I do and say-plus he is ALWAYS RIGHT-even when I am right he was right too.

These are my truths and a question, I hope you will weigh in on BOTH!

Healthy Home-Detoxifying your Food

Detoxifying food

I first learned about organic produce and other natural remedies from the book Natural Cures by Kevin Trudeau, it was a hand me down from my grandmother. After that-I was hooked and dug in deep to find out more about natural remedies and organic foods!

I came across Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, where she exposed the hazards of the pesticide DDT and she described how DDT entered the food chain and collected in the fatty tissues of animals, including human beings, and caused cancer and genetic damage. After further research I learned that the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported in 2007, that over 1 billion tons of pesticides are used in the US every year. This was it for me! All the proof I needed!  I was determined to rid my body of chemicals and toxins!

Today there is lots of research like the study conducted at the University of Washington which showed that you can significantly and immediately reduce the amounts of pesticides in your child’s body by switching to organic foods.

When available and affordable, I go organic! Here is the infamous dirty dozen list to start with. These 12 fruits and vegetables have the most pesticide residue so when available go organic with these! I never find all of these in the organic section at my stores. Maybe two or three  at the most, so just go organic when you can, and don’t freak out about it.

Another option to avoid unwanted pesticides is to grow your own veggies and plant fruit trees and bushes! Not only will it save you money, but you will have peace of mind in knowing your food is safe. Gardening, are you crazy?!? Yes, start here! If we didn’t move so much I would have my own.

National Mom’s Nite Out!

The house is a mess, the children are covered in nutella, and the baby just woke up wailing-all I want is some peace so I can get some work done. How many of us have been there? Yup, just about all of us-if you haven’t you must have a really good sleeper or an only child.

This calls for a Mom’s Night Out! Two states have already declared this an actual day New York and Nevada! This year Mom’s Night Out will be bigger than ever because of the release of the official Moms’ Night Out Movie in theaters May 9th.

This star-studded cast is sure to give an accurate portrayal of some of the hilarious situations Moms have found themselves in at one time or another in the wonderful world of parenting.

Cheesy Quinoa and Broccoli Potterole

Potterole? She has lost her mind-nope I haven’t, casseroles take too long for my family and they just never turn out right for me! So I make a potterole its not making it all in just one pot either, but in the end you do mix it all up in one pot/pan.

Here are 5 quick facts about quinoa:

1. It’s pronounced “keen-wah”, just so we clear that confusion up.

2. It’s high in phytonutrients and flavonoids which are great cancer fighters.

3. As a complete protein, it contains all 9 essential amino acids and can provide up to 17% of your daily requirement of protein.

4. Prebiotic nutrients in quinoa help feed the probiotic (good) bacteria in your intestine!

5.  Once called “the gold of the Inca’s” because of how it increased stamina.

Now, do you feel a little bit more confident that you should bring this great food into your diet! Its easy just use it in place of rice in a dish you are already making!  I really wanted to incorporate quinoa into our diet because it is so healthy for you and this is how I did it for our family.

  • 1 3/4 cups quinoa
  • 1 box of chicken stock
  • 1 giant head of broccoli
  • 3 cups shredded cheddar cheese (2 cups for the cheese sauce and one to add-on top)
  • 2 tsp of all-purpose seasoning/chicken seasoning
  • 1/2 cup of milk
  • 1 tbs of flour
  • 1/2 tsp oil
  • 2 tsp butter
  • Salt and pepper

What you’ll need and prepping:

  • Strainer with fine holes to rinse the quinoa
  • Regular strainer to wash the broccoli
  • 3 pots, one for the quinoa (this one needs a lid), one for the broccoli, and one for the chicken (if your adding it you can omit it and make this an easy meatless Monday meal!)
  • Knife and cutting board to chop up the broccoli, then cut up the chicken if your adding it
  • Wisk for making the rue and cheese sauce
  • Cooking spoon for the quinoa
  • Spatula for the chicken
  • Slotted spoon for the broccoli

Step 1: In the pot that has a lid, place the butter, then toss in your rinsed quinoa. Gently toast up your quinoa in the butter just gives it a deeper flavor. It’s what I would do with the rice so I do the same with this to keep similar flavors going-and to avoid rejection from my family.

Step 2: I pour in the whole box of chicken stock and bring to a boil then set to low for about 12-15 minutes give or take. Put another pot of water to boil for the broccoli. Get a pan/pot ready for the chicken to cook up in also.

Step 3: Cut up broccoli and put it in the boiling pot of water, I like mine still crisp so I only leave it in for 8 minutes or so. Cut up the chicken and season it with a chicken seasoning or all seasoning. (The one below is my favorite!) Throw the chicken in a pan and cook til done, then set it on a plate to cool because with the left over drippings from the pan we will build our rue/cheese sauce.

Step 4: When the Quinoa looks like the picture below it’s done. Just cover it with a lid and let it sit until its time to mix it in. (If it looks like it might have access liquid it will absorb some while it sits.) Take the broccoli out of the water and set in a strainer too cool. Grab the pan you made the chicken in and add the oil and flour and whisk together then stir in the milk. Turn the heat to low and let it slowly thicken up. Once it thickens a bit add in the cheese (2 cups, save 1 cup for sprinkling on top) and whisk, whisk, whisk.

Step 5: Now that the cheese sauce is ready add in the quinoa and chicken then mix it up. I like to top it with the broccoli and cheese! ENJOY! 🙂

Where I will share my truths as a Mother & Stepmother.

My Truths for Today & a couple of questions!

  1. I used my tub as a play pen for Ezra this week while I showered. (Our shower and tub are separate) It worked great to keep an eye on him+he kept busy with bath toys. He loved it! My mommy brain at its best..
  2. I have been so off track since the start of this year. We are just getting back into a routine again with football starting and after having to switch gymnastic days for the girls. Hopefully soon it will settle down and be comfortable again-I do not transition well.
  3. I really enjoyed getting your opinions on last weeks post, therefore I would love to continue with asking a couple of questions. First one, Do you split household work with your partner? In our house I am responsible for the children, and the house. He is responsible for the job/income and the cars. Traditional, right? It’s been hard for me, because in the past I went to school and worked and we split the workload, but now I am a stay at home mom-& it’s all mine. 🙂
  4. Do you get one on one time with each of your children? This bother’s me the most in our house, because I know its so important coming from an early childhood background, but I just feel like I don;t make an effort to give each child enough one on one time.

These are my truths and a few questions I hope you will weigh in on!

Happy Friday+Have a great weekend! 🙂
