Earlier I posted Let me be your friend & let’s protect Children’s Health together! this is a follow-up to that post and today I wanted to share household tips for greening up your home and making it safer for your children.
- Vacuuming should be done at least twice a week with a HEPA filter, and use plain water to mop up dust and allergens that vacuuming can leave behind on hard floors. If you prefer using a cleaner to mop then choose one that uses natural essential oils for scent or one is free of fragrances and dyes.
- Did you know that roughly 70% of household dust, pests, pollutants and dirt (which often contains lead and chemicals) are carried indoors on the bottom of your shoes! You can easily remove shoes when you enter your home and carry them to your closet or set up a shoe station by the door.
- Remember to check regularly to see if your vacuum bag/canister needs to be emptied and also check your HEPA filters for the recommended date to replace.
- In order to help stop dust from circulating in your home you should also regularly check, clean, or replace your furnace and air conditioner filters preferably with hypoallergenic air filters.
Does your household take shoes off at the door?
We try to remember to always take our shoes off at the door and either leave them by the door or carry them to the closet. (Hard thing for the kids to remember-especially when they are running in to go potty really quick!)
How often do you change HEPA filters and air filters in your house?
Our last vacuum I replaced the HEPA filter once but the other two filters in it many times. Our new vacuum doesn’t seem to have a HEPA filter or any others that need to be replaced-they are all washable (I will have to research it)! HEPA filters are known to last a year or two depending on usage. Since we rent right now we check them when we move in and usually they are clean but they sound be changed every season.
How often do you mop and vacuum your home?
My cleaning routine is out of sorts right now but usually I vacuum as need which is like every-other-day and mop once a week (Isn’t it funny how you thought cleaning was so much fun when you were little)! My favorite Eco-Friendly-Kid Safe floor cleaner is Method they have a hard floor in Lemon Ginger and wood floor in Almond that is amazing!
